Frame and base construction

The power end of the Oilwell 8-P-HD is an all-in-one welded steel frame with a heavy-duty reinforcement design. This structure provides extraordinary rigidity and is key to ensuring that the components of the drivetrain remain precisely aligned under extreme loads.

Gears and transmissions

 

We equipped the 8-P-HD with a cutting herringbone gear set. Compared to other gear types, herringbone gear design allows for smoother, quieter power transmission and natural offset of axial thrust, significantly reducing bearing wear.

Crankshaft and bearing assembly

 

The crankshaft is the core component of the power end, which is forged by high-quality alloy steel (35CrMo, 40CRMNMO or modified 4340 steel) and subjected to strict heat treatment process to obtain maximum strength, toughness and fatigue resistance.

The 8-P-HD bearing system is a sophisticated network of load management rather than a simple stack of parts. The power end is subjected to complex forces in operation: the huge radial load caused by the crankshaft, the axial force generated by the gear transmission and the reciprocating impact load of the crosshead.

Main bearings: 2 sets of double row tapered roller bearings for large combined radial and axial loads from the crankshaft.

Pinion shaft bearings: 2 sets of self-aligning roller bearings, capable of adapting to any slight shaft deflection and maintaining perfect gear engagement at all times.

Crankshaft-connecting rod bearings: 3 sets of cylindrical roller bearings, designed to withstand high radial loads at eccentric journals.

Crosshead bearings: 3 sets of double row needle roller bearings provide extremely high load capacity in a compact space.

Lubrication system

 

In order to ensure the stable operation of the power end under high load for a long time, 8-P-HD adopts a double lubrication system combining splash lubrication and forced lubrication.

Advantages of L-type split module

 

The Oilwell 8-P-HD features an industry-leading two-piece, l-shaped hydraulic end module design. Compared with the traditional"Valve-on-valve" one-piece or monolithic modules, L-type design has a revolutionary advantage. There are many disadvantages in the old design, such as high maintenance cost, integral replacement after wear, difficult replacement of valves, and cracking caused by stress concentration.

Our L-shaped design perfectly addresses these pain points:

Cost-effective: the most commonly worn suction modules can be replaced independently of the discharge module, greatly reducing maintenance costs.

Safety and speed: valve and seat replacement becomes faster, easier, and safer, and maintenance personnel can operate directly without removing the valve guide sleeve, significantly reducing downtime.

Excellent durability: the L-shaped design allows for the use of more metal material at critical locations to support internal pressure, effectively dispersing stress and improving fatigue life.

Materials, forging and heat treatment

We use high-quality high-strength forged alloy steels, such as AISI 4135(35CrMo) and AISI 4130, as the base material for hydraulic end modules. The manufacturing process uses high pressure forging followed by precision heat treatment. The l-shaped design distributes the large stresses more efficiently, and the high integrity forging material can withstand these stresses. All forgings are subjected to strict nondestructive testing (ultrasonic testing according to ASTM a 388 standard) before delivery to ensure the absolute integrity of the material.

Valves, seats and cylinder liners

 

The 8-P-HD comes with an API # 6 valve chamber. We use a quick-change Bonnet system with threaded rings or other quick-change mechanisms to further reduce maintenance times. The connection between the piston rod and the middle rod adopts the way of guiding, shoulder positioning and metal-to-metal locking, which ensures the safe and concentric connection and avoids the looseness and eccentric wear in operation.
